For adults in education, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) means a sense of belonging to a team.  We will begin to develop relationships within the Curriculum Leadership Development Network through conversations and activities that connect people.  The ideas shared can be used with your district’s teams to incorporate new people into the group and to expand the relationships that are already present.

Harnessing AI for Human-Centered Educational Leadership

Presenter:  Micah Miner

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the world, and education is no exception. AI has the potential to enhance teaching and learning, but it's important to use it wisely. This half-day session will demystify AI, exploring its applications and showcasing its potential benefits while addressing critical concerns such as privacy, security, and ethics.  Dive into ethics, data privacy, security, and ways to approach strategic AI implementation in education with practical guides and frameworks. Explore frameworks for using AI in leadership and curriculum design. Discover how these new AI tools can enhance teaching and learning experiences as well as contribute to student, teacher, and educational leader understanding of the technology. Walk away with actionable strategies for adopting AI in an ethical, thoughtful way.  Learning Objectives:  By the end of this session, participants will be able to:  Understand the basics of AI and its potential applications in education  Identify the strengths and limitations of AI tools  Discuss the ethical considerations of using AI in education  Implement AI tools in their own classrooms or schools

Data Literacy to Ensure Student Achievement through School Improvement & Accountability

Presenter:  Cathleen Weber

 

The purpose of this course is to provide administrators with an in-depth overview of the indicators utilized in the  response to Every Student Success Act (ESSA) accountability system. Included in this workshop will be an overview of the ESSA law, the indicators utilized to designate schools, the requirements of schools designated for targeted and comprehensive support, funding support provided through the Title I - School Improvement 1003(a) Grant, and the requirements of the grant process including the use of the ISBE IWAS portal. In addition, participants will be exposed to the reports utilized for the annual designations available in IWAS. Participants will also discuss school improvement alignment to ensure positive student achievement. Although time will be devoted to those designated for improvement, this academy will be important for every school due to the annual calculation of the summative index score. Time will also be provided for participants to share experiences, barriers to student achievement, successful innovative ideas on student achievement, and communication opportunities for participants to guide stakeholder knowledge in their community.

Empowering Courageous Conversations

Accountability is essential for continuous improvement and the key to organizational excellence.  Holding ourselves and our teams accountable is oftentimes difficult and uncomfortable.  In this interactive session school and district leaders will learn the importance of creating a healthy professional climate and culture and how to engage in courageous conversations with thought, connection and care. Participants will be empowered to navigate the discomfort, speak the truth and elevate their communication skills.

Illinois State Career Pathway Endorsement

Presenters:  Anthony Kroll and Gina Schyler

Learn more about how the Illinois State Career Pathway Endorsement provides your students with knowledge about  and possible future careers.  Career Pathways will guide students to post-secondary activities appropriate for their interests.  Explore how your school can fulfill this new state requirement with existing programming and high-quality instructional techniques.  This session will also cover College Career Readiness Indicators (CCRI) of which all Illinois high schools will be responsible for reporting.  This data has been included in the annual state report card for each school but will begin to impact the Summative Designation calculations in 2024.  Hear about best practices used at other high schools to track and highlight this data.

Culturally Responsive Teaching

In today’s diverse and interconnected world, educators play a crucial role in creating classrooms where everyone feels valued, understood and empowered. This workshop is designed to equip educators with practical strategies to elevate cultural competence, promote a sense of belonging, and foster empathy within their classrooms.

Cultural Competence: Discover how to effectively navigate the intersection of cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives present in the classroom. Learn strategies to enhance your understanding of different cultural norms, values and communication styles, enabling you to create a respectful and inclusive environment.

Belonging: Explore methods to make every student feel like an essential and valued member of the classroom community. Understand the importance of recognizing and celebrating individual identities, and gain insights into fostering an environment where everyone feels safe to express themselves authentically.

Empathy Building: Delve into the power of empathy as an education tool. Learn how to cultivate empathy among students, helping them develop a deeper understanding of diverse experiences and perspectives. Discover techniques to encourage open dialogue and respectful communication, essential skills for building meaningful connections.

Classroom Strategies: Get hands-on with a range of practical classroom strategies that promote inclusivity, cultural awareness, and empathy. From curriculum adjustments to teaching methodologies, you’ll explore concrete techniques that can be seamlessly integrated into your teaching approach.

Interactive Activities: Engage in interactive discussions, case studies, and role-playing exercises that allow you to practice and internalize the concepts covered. Share experiences, insights, and challenges with fellow educators, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

Why Your Why Matters  (Administrator Academy #1445)
Presenter: Dr. Courtney Orzel

 

Dr. Courtney Orzel’s version of this academy, subtitled “Why Your Why Matters,” coaches participants to reconnect
with their reasons for becoming and remaining educators, to learn to connect more deeply with and support their colleagues and team members, and ultimately to re-confirm their commitment to educating students and improving schools. Participants will examine their own motivations and current social-emotional condition, learn those of their colleagues and, through sharing, discussion, and role-playing, acquire and practice strategies to coach themselves and team members into healthier social-emotional states. Having “re-found and/or recommitted to their why,” participants are able to better connect to their student’s learning and well-being, as well as to individual, team, school, and district improvement.
